چکیده

This paper is based on portions of a keynote presentation, which explored the boundaries of what is understood about the vibration behavior of long cylinders excited by vortex shedding. The source of data is a recent field experiment on a long flexible cylinder, densely instrumented with fiber optic strain gauges. The paper emphasis is on previously unknown or unexplained phenomena and in some cases offers provocative insights as opposed to conclusive proofs. Three particular topics are covered: (i) the occurrence of peak strain and fatigue damage rates at unexpected locations, (ii) the dominance of traveling wave rather than standing wave response, and (iii) the appearance of stable cylinder trajectories, such as figure eights and crescents in pure traveling wave regions. Potential explanations are offered and areas for promising additional research are proposed. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the Vortex-induced Vibration Response of a Model Riser and Location of Sensors for Fatigue Damage Prediction

This study is concerned with vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of deepwater marine risers. Riser response measurements from model tests on a densely instrumented long, flexible riser in uniform and sheared currents offer an almost ideal set-up for our work. Our objectives are two-fold: (i) we use the measured data to describe complexities inherent in riser motions accompanying VIV; and (ii) we dis...

Monitoring VIV fatigue damage on marine risers

Long flexible cylinders (e.g. risers, tendons, mooring lines) exposed to the marine environment encounter ocean currents leading to vortex-induced vibration (VIV). These oscillations, often driven at high frequencies over extended periods of time may result in structural failure of the member due to fatigue damage accumulation. Recent developments in instrumentation and installation of data acq...

Traveling Waves from the Arclength Parameterization: Vortex Sheets with Surface Tension

We study traveling waves for the vortex sheet with surface tension. We use the anglearclength description of the interface rather than Cartesian coordinates, and we utilize an arclength parameterization as well. In this setting, we make a new formulation of the traveling wave ansatz. For this problem, it should be possible for traveling waves to overturn, and notably, our formulation does allow...

Transverse Modal Vibrations of Vertical Tensioned Risers A Simplified Analytical Approach*

Transverse Modal Vibrations of Vertical Tensioned Risers. A simplified Analytical Approach — The paper examines the physics of riser transverse modal vibrations of the type induced by VIV (Vortex Induced Vibrations). It presents a simplified analytical solution for such vibrations of vertical tensioned risers with uniform linear characteristics. The solution leads to simple expressions for the ...
